NRSWA Unit S1: Monitoring Signing, Lighting and Guarding

Set your engineers up with the skills, knowledge and experience needed to gain their Streetworks Unit S1 accreditation.

About NRSWA Unit S1

The NRSWA Unit S1 Streetworks course is designed for anyone responsible for setting up traffic lights, signs, cones, barriers, and other guarding equipment on highways.

This means it’s perfect for site supervisors and managers, highway inspectors, local authority workers, engineers, and planners.

Previously known as Unit 10, Unit S1 is essential for most supervisor and managerial roles in the roadworks industry. Many local authorities require this qualification for teams overseeing street and road works.

How much does the Unit S1 training cost?

Your employees can complete NRSWA’s Unit S1 for as little as £150 upfront - or you can choose to spread the cost over 12 or 24 months.

Will Unit S1 qualify engineers to set up signing, lighting and guarding equipment?

No. Unit S1 focuses on the skills and experience needed to supervise the setup of signage, lighting and guarding equipment. If they want to be an operative, which means they are responsible for the actual set up, they’ll need to complete the NRSWA Unit 01 course instead. We offer that too!

Do attendees have to complete all of the NRSWA units?

Not at all. Many supervisors choose to complete all of the NRSWA units, but you can pick and choose the courses that best fit your team’s responsibilities.

How long does the Unit S1 accreditation last?

The accreditation is valid for five years and needs to be renewed after that.

Do you offer any other NRSWA courses for supervisors?

Absolutely! Here’s a list of our NRSWA courses for supervisors:

  • S2: Monitoring excavation in the highway
  • S3: Monitoring reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials
  • S4: Monitoring reinstatement of sub-base and base in non-bituminous materials
  • S5: Monitoring reinstatement in bituminous materials
  • S7: Monitoring reinstatement of modular surfaces, concrete footways

Should my employees complete supervisor and operative training?

They can if they want to, but it's not required. Having both supervisor and operative NRSWA units gives them more flexibility in their careers, allowing them to work in both roles (just not at the same time!).

How will attendees be assessed?

The course includes a mix of theory tests and practical assessments, and attendees will need to pass both.

How long does the course take?

This Streetworks course only takes one day to complete. Not long at all!

What do attendees need to bring?

Make sure they bring:

  • A valid form of ID, like a passport or driving licence
  • PPE for the practical assessments, including high vis vests or jackets, safety boots, a hard hat, safety gloves, and safety glasses
